The Start of the Danube River Walk

Today marks the start of the Danube River Walk carried out by Li An Phoa and Maarten van der Schaaf from Drinkable Rivers. From September 18 to October 11, 2024, those participating in the walk will walk along the Danube River from the mouth along the Black Sea, to the confluence of the Jiu River, and lastly towards the Serbian border. Along the way, they will meet farmers, school kids, anglers, business representatives, politicians, and policymakers and talk with them about their vision of a Drinkable Danube and mobilize people to care for the river. Everyone who is interested in joining the walk is invited. During the walk, Phoa and Van der Schaaf will explore what the Danube means for people who live along the river. In order to bring the conversation about the Danube to the dinner table, they will stay with locals who welcome them in their homes. The day-to-day walk schedule is published on Danube.DrinkableRivers.org

A citizen science measurement symbolizes the start of each day at the meeting point between 9-10:00AM. This experience is educational and a way to engage with local people. The study will be part of Drinkable Rivers’ international citizen science programme that enables people to learn about the health of their rivers. Romanian partners will continue to use this tool after the walk ends and track whether the health of the Danube is improving or not.

You are still more than welcome to join the walk in Romania in the following weeks. To sign up, please complete this form. To host Li An Phoa and Maarten van der Schaaf on their journey, please express your interest via this form.
